SNEHA – Building community resilience to HIV/AIDS

HIV/AIDS is the dreaded disease of our times. The best way to get rid of this cureless disease is prevention. Educating people and making them literate on the disease helps them to keep away from it. It also helps to reduce stigma attached to it.

GOAL :

Reduced vulnerability among communities to HIV/AIDS and improved quality of life of PLWHAs (People living with Hiv/Aids).

Target Area :

6 Panchayats around Kinnigoly of Mangalore Taluk, Dakshina Kannada District.

OBJECTIVES :

  • PLHAs utilize quality care and support services without the fear of stigma and discrimination.
  • Increased community resilience to manage HIV and AIDS.
  • Stake Holder Committees and Village Health Committees formed and strengthened to carry on the work.

ACHIEVEMENTS :

  • A Resource Directory providing information on Govt. offices and NGOs working for prevention of HIV/AIDS is brought out.
  • 75% of families are providing home based care to People living with HIV.
  • 12 PLHIVs are actively engaged in IGP activities.
  • 97 awareness programmes on HIV/AIDS and related issues were conducted.
  • 26 children are getting support from Clinton Foundation towards their health care.
  • 38 Village Health Committees (VHC)are formed. The VHCs mobilize local resources and use it for the care and support programmes.
  • 50 community VCTC camps were organized.
  • Two Support Groups are formed.
  • World AIDS Day, Children’s Day is observed every year.

Future Thrust :

  • Strengthening the Support Groups and making them self-sustainable.
  • Extend this programme to other areas covering the entire Mangalore Taluk of Dakshina Kannada District.
